Notes:
The cavalry Brigades of Robertson and Jones spent most of the campaign on security duty and in line of communications in northern Virginia; exception: White’s Battalion of “Commanches” [this unit’s activities mostly occurred during the marches and rides north; in this respect, the Battalion’s strength on June 30 was 262 (cf. p. D-27)].
Two horse-artillery batteries–Ashby (VA) and Lynchburg (VA)–were with Robertson’s and Jones’s Brigades.
The cavalry command of Imboden was technically not part of the Army of Northern Virginia but had been ordered to cooperate with it during this campaign. Imboden’s units were not engaged at Gettysburg and spent the early weeks of the campaign riding north as they covered the rear of the army against possible threats from West Virginia and western Pennsylvania (Chapter 1). During the latter stages of the campaign, Imboden’s command led Lee’s army away from Gettysburg toward the river-crossing points (Chapter 5).
*Estimates for the total number of troops in both armies vary from source to source, but most seem to agree that the range is 60,000-75,000 for the ANV and 80,000-95,000 for the AoP.- Addressing Gettysburg
